Denh Dip, Managing Director of Mx Transformation, chats about the role she plays at Havas and the importance of being resilient in our industry (especially in 2020).

"Products can be built but if people aren’t convinced then it’s never going to work"

You recently took up the role of Managing Director of Mx Transformation – can you tell us a little about the role and the challenges you face as a team? 

My role is to help roll out Mx, up-skill teams and talent and help markets implement and adopt Mx. I think the biggest challenge any global team faces is getting people aligned to and implement the global vision. No one wants to be forced to change. It’s about working with key stakeholders, being respectful of the cultural nuances and leadership styles and identifying where the opportunities are. So, it’s as much about the people as it is the productProducts can be built but if people aren’t convinced then it’s never going to work. 

You’ve worked all over the world in London, New York, Dubai – how do you think that has shaped you? What are the toughest things about living abroad? 

When you move countries there is one thing that you learn very quickly and that’s resilience!  Itreally exciting moving countries – new adventures, new opportunities, discovering new cultures but it’s also not easy.  It’s a huge upheaval; learning to navigate the local culture, the governing rules, convincing people you’re good at your job (because it’s not a given), finding new friends, finding a place to live when you have no credit history! But that’s not the toughest part.  The toughest thing about moving countries iprobably the initial loneliness. When the initial excitement dies down and you’re still trying to make friends, the loneliness can be hardBut that’s when the resilience kicks in.    

This resilience has also shaped me professionally. This industry can be tough – company politics, challenging personalities (that’s clients and internal teams), the hours and especially pitching! You need resilience to succeed.

What is the best advice you have ever received and what advice would you give to young marketers? 

The best advice I ever received from a mentor of mine was to enjoy whatever you choose to do. We spend most of our lives at work so it’s important to enjoy it! I’ve always tried to follow that advice. I say “tried” because that’s not always been the case and I’ve always regretted those decisions.   

I would pass that same advice onto young marketers but I would also add to believe in yourself and don’t give up your professional dreams! I wanted to live and work in NYC for the longest time but it didn’t happen on my first attempt, it happened on my third attempt! 

What do you love to do outside of work, what are your other passions? 

I love working out, so I swim, practice yoga and partake in military bootcamp – it’s a killer but the endorphins afterwards are totally worth it.  I’m also a coach focusing on personal transformation, which can be anything from re-starting careers, new life opportunities or building confidence – it’s mentally exhausting especially after a full working day/week but it’s incredibly rewarding especially when I see the transformation in my clients.  

What does your dream holiday look like when we can travel again? 

Mongolia! It has such a rich history, I’ve wanted to visit for the longest time, traverse the mountain and deserts.  It’s this wonderful mix of traditional ways of life and an explosion of modernity, all itching to be explored!
